MENTAL HEALTH TABOO
THE MENTAL HEALTH TABOO
Mental health is a taboo that doesn't get talked about
enough and hasn't been talked about for almost all of humanity. It's a topic
that I will be speaking on for a lot of my blogs because it is something that
hits home for me. Mental Health is something that I deal with on a daily basis,
whether it's my own mental illnesses, friend's, family's or patients at my
work. I see mental illnesses every day of my life. And I realize that it's like
that for a lot of the world. According to the National Alliance on Mental
Illnesses 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. live with mental illnesses at some point in
their life. If you'd like to read the article this is the name: NAMI: Mental Health by the Numbers.
It has some cool Mental Health fact sheets that you can look at and some tips
if you need help.
When I'm at work, a lot of the time I forget how privileged
I am to have such easy access to mental illness help. I bump elbows with some
of the most amazing Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, therapists,
Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and Techs that I've ever met. They are hands down
some of the most amazing people I've ever met and a lot of them have actually
helped me through some of my rough times in the past. And although I'm
relatively new at my job, (being there only over a year) I'm very grateful for it and the people I work with.
I plan on writing an entire blog post about my job.
But I mean, I get it. Mental illnesses are scary, they're
unpredictable, they can change any time. I understand the taboo to some extent.
Throughout the years mental illnesses were looked at like something of the
devil or evil spirits or whatever anyone believed. The frontal lobotomies, Straight jackets, white padded rooms, "insane
asylums", electroshock therapy. All of it. I get it, I mean come on man!
We all saw American Horror Story Asylum, that shit is scary. But the only
reason it's still so scary to some is that it's not being talked about enough.
Education is one thing that people need more of and I believe especially about
mental health. Point Blank, we need to talk about mental health more, end of
story. There will be many, many more blog posts about these type of topics so
if anyone is reading, you can look forward to that.
Thanks for reading,
